Koung’s Wantan Mee – In-house Roasted Char Siew With Springy Noodles, At Geylang

Let’s just be real. There is no ‘perfect’ wanton noodles in Singapore. There is always something lacking, whether it is the noodles, char siew, wantons, sauce or soup.

If a wanton noodle stall can get three out of the above done right, then you probably see quite a decent following. Even the well-raved about Kok Kee Wanton Mee couldn’t get its char siew flawless.

In operation since 1964, Koung’s Wantan Mee continues to draw fans to this part of Geylang for its old-school wanton noodles.

The location is kind of near Geylang Lor 21 even though the sign still indicates Lor 13.
Note: The wait can be quite long even if there are not many customers in sight. So you may have to wait anything from 30 to 45 minutes?

A basic plate of Wanton Noodle in dry or soup version is sold at $4, while you can opt for extra noodles, vegetables, ingredients, or dumpling.

After waiting long in anticipation, I thought that the draw is really in the char siew, roasted over charcoal by themselves to a tender finish.

It has more lean meat than fats when compared to the usual, but it does go well with the noodles.

The eggy noodles are tossed in this house-made chilli sauce that is quite unlike others.

Wantons were not bad, could be plumper I thought, and perhaps its weakest link.

While I can’t say it is my favourite, I can understand why people would like the blend of sweet-spicy taste.
