The Fabulous Baker Boy – Fab Cake Cafe, Now With AirCon

For those who do not know, The Fabulous Baker Boy TFBB has returned after a long renovation, and is now fully air-conditioned with more space.

Located at the food Fort Canning Parks, I have always liked this space (though tough to get to) where you experience some greenery and fresh air outside. Plus there is a “That Spare Room” next door where local arts and design are often featured.

This may sound weird, but the plot of land TFBB is on is where I used to take my showers. Ok ok. Don’t think wrong, I used to take swimming classes at River Valley Swimming pool, and the shower and cafeteria area has been converted into this bakery café. Yes, that same spot. So it means something to me.

Chef Juwanda Hashim’s (more affectionally known as ‘Ju’) has always baked one of the best cakes in Singapore. His style I would say is classic layered, known to be moist, with some interesting experimentations in terms of frosting.

His Big Lub Carrot Cake ($8.50 per slice), FAB Red Velvet Cake with Valrhona chocolate frosting ($9.00), and Salted Caramel ($8.00) are some of the best versions you can get in Singapore. (Read: 11 Best Carrot Cake Dessert In Singapore – Moist, Delicious & Spiced)

We tried the Strawberry Lemon Yoghurt ($8.50) this time. While it was all pretty pink and the Swiss Meringue butter cream and cream cheese filling were smooth and delicious, the Greek Yoghurt sponge was too sweet for our liking, and texture felt like eating a Christmas cake all over again.

Food was a matter of more hits than misses, though I must add that many local cafes’ main slip-up is usually the overpriced yet second-rate food.

TFBB’s signature dishes are the Ju’s Prawn Pappardelle ($20), Tuna Melt ($12), Fried Chicken & Waffle, and Towkay Ng’s Egg Benedict ($12.50). (Do note of their meal and brunch times though – it’s not available the entire day.)

The pasta was surprisingly good, with the tiger prawns cooked in a secret crustacean cream. The egg pappardelle was cooked appropriately al dente, evenly coated with the agreeable sauce. Not too heavy or light, nicely executed.

In brunch summary, “Yay” to the eggs ben and “Nay” to the pancakes. TFBB is a lovely bakery café offering some of the best cakes around in Singapore, located in a tranquil space.

Thank God for aircon and fab cakes!
