Maybe the residents staying around Bedok like to stay up late for suppers and ice cream.
From midnight supper spot at Bedok 85 Fengshan Food Centre to the new gelato bar Hay Gelato that opens till 2am, it seems that Bedok is indeed very ‘happening’ at night.
Night owls can also head to this new ice cream cafe Haute and Cauld at Bedok Reservoir.
The late-night hangout spot can be for those who needs some ice cream and waffles fix as they are opened till 2am daily. (But do check their FB for updated opening hours before heading down as new cafes tend to change operating hours here and there.)
So how do you pronounce “Haute and Cauld”?
The name is actually a play of the words “Hot & Cold” (For example, “oh my gawd, you are so haute!”).
That is because the café serves both (soon-to-launch) hot food mainly Egg Mayo and Tuna Mayo Sandwich Set ($10.90) and Ice Cream (Single scoop $3.80, Double scoops $7, Premium flavour +$1.50) and Waffles ($7.90).
The 20-seater space has a different feel at night, illuminated by blue neon lights that gives off a chill and relax vibe.
The Waffles ($7.90) come in 3 different flavours: Red Velvet, Charcoal and Buttermilk with a set option ($12) that includes a single scoop of ice cream with a soft drink.
Only the Charcoal Waffle was available at the time of my visit and it was promptly served within 10 minutes in a stacked fashion. I thought that resembled Oblong’s version at Serangoon Garden.
Both the Red Velvet and Charcoal waffles came with a layer of cream cheese in between the two waffles layers, while Nutella was used for the Buttermilk waffles to make the batter more moist and flavourful.
The waffle had a crispy outer layer and was fluffy on the inside – but almost like a cake instead of the airy version.
There was also icing sugar sprinkled and a layer of cream cheese sauce drizzled in between the cake-like waffles stack.
14 ice cream flavours are available on their display shelves, ranging from Pistachio, Brownies & cream, Route 88, Speculators, Strawberry Cheesecake, Aroy Mak (aka Thai Milk Tea, Mint), Golden Vanilla, Yubari Rock Melon, Cookie Monster, Creme Brûlée, Cotton Candy, to Camomile Honey.
The Yubari Rock Melon was less common and interesting, tasted like melon milk with a lingering fruitiness in its flavour.
It also complemented well with the denser Charcoal Waffle with its lighter and refreshing taste.
Texture-wise, the Pistachio was rich, creamy and yet not icy.
With a distinctive nutty-ness and earthy profile, it might be slightly on the sweeter side.
With crowd-favourite FatCat Ice Cream Bar and popular new-comer Hay Gelato not too far away, it seems like Bedok has become the new sweet spot for ice cream lovers.
