”Ice cream, chillin’, chillin’. Ice cream, chillin’. I know that my heart can be so cold. But I’m sweet for you, come put me in a cone…”

It seems like ice cream and waffles cafes and kiosks continue to sprout out around Singapore, with many opening beyond the midnight hours.

Here are 20 relatively new ice cream shops we have visited in Singapore for a sweet treat, opened from late 2019 or during 2020. (Note that while opening hours stated here are correct at time of publication, do check for updates on their respective social media pages as they change from time to time.)

Hay Gelato
136 Bedok North Ave 3, #01-148, Singapore 460136
Opening Hours: 1pm – 2am (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

By the folks behind Brine Restaurant at North Bridge Road is their new 18-seaters (10 indoors, 8 outdoors) gelato cafe at Bedok.

A single scoop of gelato is priced at $4.20 whereas premium flavours will cost an additional $1 and waffles at $5.50.

A total of 12 flavours will be available at any one time, with interesting flavours such as Balsamic Strawberry, Truffle, Meyer Lemon, Yuzu Ginger and Smoked Hay.

The Smoked Hay Gelato ($5.20 for premium flavour) is made by smoking real hay (plants or grass dried and stored as animal fodder or food) and infusing into their milk-based gelato, the Smoked Hay gelato was dented in the centre with cocoa nibs on top.

The gelato was smooth and milky, with distinctive smokey-ness that lingers in the mouth without the grassy flavours of hay, whereas the coca nibs add some crunch to it, making it more robust and earthy. Hay Gelato (Bedok)

Haute And Cauld
740 Bedok Reservoir Road, #01-3179, Singapore 470740
Opening Hours: 11am – 2am (Mon – Sun)

Night owls can head to this new ice cream cafe Haute and Cauld at Bedok Reservoir.

The late-night hangout spot can be for those who needs some ice cream and waffles fix as they are opened till 2am daily.

The name is actually a play of the words “Hot & Cold”. That is because the café serves both (soon-to-launch) hot food mainly Egg Mayo and Tuna Mayo Sandwich Set ($10.90) and Ice Cream (Single scoop $3.80, Double scoops $7, Premium flavour +$1.50) and Waffles ($7.90).

The Waffles ($7.90) come in 3 different flavours: Red Velvet, Charcoal and Buttermilk with a set option ($12) that includes a single scoop of ice cream with a soft drink.

14 ice cream flavours are available on their display shelves, ranging from Pistachio, Brownies & cream, Route 88, Speculators, Strawberry Cheesecake, Aroy Mak (aka Thai Milk Tea, Mint), Golden Vanilla, Yubari Rock Melon, Cookie Monster, Creme Brûlée, Cotton Candy, to Camomile Honey.

The Yubari Rock Melon was less common and interesting, tasted like melon milk with a lingering fruitiness in its flavour. Haute And Cauld (Bedok Reservoir)

I See Cream
Thomson V2, 11 Sin Ming Road, #01-14, Singapore 575629
Opening Hours: 2pm – 11pm (Tue – Thu), 11am – 2am (Fri – Sat), 11am – 11pm (Sun), Closed Mon

Taking over the space of a nail art salon at Upper Thomson V Two, the 22 seaters (8 indoors, 14 outdoors) space at I See Cream has a simplistic interior, decked in grey and white.

There were 12 gelato flavours available when I visited, such as premium flavours ($5 per scoop, $20 per pint) of Pistachio, Valrhona Dark Chocolate, Lychee Raspberry, Coconut, Yuzu, and Biscoff.

Other special flavours ($4 per scoop, $16 per pint) included Mango, White Peach Yogurt, Soursop, Blueberry, Rock Melon and Chocolate Chip.

I noticed that 8 out of 12 flavours were all fruit-based, all in the form of gelatos without sorbets for the lactose-intolerant.

The single scoop of Biscoff Gelato ($5) was served with Herb & Spice infused Belgian Waffle ($3.50) and edible Gold flakes were added as a nice finishing touch.

Made using bits of Lotus Biscoff biscuits, it added a firmer bite to the smooth, creamy and sticky texture of the gelato, adding some malty sweetness to the overall taste. I See Cream (Thomson)

Salted Caramel Artisan Ice Cream – Bukit Timah
17 Lorong Kilat, #01-10, Kilat Court, Singapore 598139
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

Salted Caramel Artisan Ice Cream has finally opened another outlet at Lorong Kilat (off Bukit Timah) right next to Udders Ice cream.

The new Salted Caramel outlet is much bigger than the former, less echoey, with minimalist woody décor.

A single scoop goes at $3.90, double for $7.60, while a take-home pint of 500ml is at $13.90.

Flavours include rotating choices of Ispahan, Dark Chocolate Sorbet, Cookies & Cream, Earl Grey, Espresso & Caramel Biscuits, Horlicks Tim Tam, Lychee, Milo Crunch, Raspberry Sorbet, Tahitian Vanilla, Black Sesame, Speculoos, Kaya Toast, Hazelnut Praline, and Peppermint Brownie.

For first-timers, you probably have to go for signature Salted Caramel, a sweet and salty flavour included with hand harvested French flower sea salt aka Fleur de Sel.

What was appealing was that sweet, salty balance yet with a touch of that lingering bitter edge (more than the usual), pleasurable on the taste buds. Salted Caramel Artisan Ice Cream (Lor Kilat)

Celine’s Gelato
275 Thomson Road, Novena Regency, #01-30, Singapore 307645
Opening Hours: 10am – 8pm (Mon – Sat), Closed Sun

Celine’s Gelato has gone from a mobile gelato cart to a physical shop at Novena Regency. The prices are reasonable, with Classic flavour starting from $5 for a single scoop and $7.50 for double scoops, whereas premium ones are priced at an additional $0.50 each.

There are 6 rotating flavours available at any one time due to the limit of gelato canisters in their gelato cart.

Classic flavours range from Chocolate, Black Sesame, Cookies & Cream, Choco Hazelnut, Mango Passion Sorbet, Key Lime; while Premium flavours include Pistachio and D24 Durian.

The Chocolate is their best-seller, made fresh with 72% Venezuela cocoa.

The Black Sesame gelato was my favourite – nutty, earthy, and rich, complemented with finely grounded sesame texture and the aroma of roasted sesame seeds. Celine’s Gelato (Novena Regency)

Pints & Cones
304 Serangoon Avenue 2 #01-02, Singapore 550304
Opening Hours: 1pm – 10:30pm (Mon – Sun)

Pints & Cones pairs handcrafted gelato with craft beer offerings. Price wise, a Single Scoop retails at $3.50 and Double Scoop at $6.50.

They offer a series of classic gelato flavours such as Tiramisu, Roasted Pistachio, Mango Passionfruit and Rocher.

After scrutinizing, I felt that the flavours available were slightly common and a bit too ‘safe’ for the adventurous me.

Perhaps the most fanciful name that caught my attention was the Elderflower Lime, which came with sorbet-like texture.

I liked how the refreshing tangy notes complemented well with scented elderflower floral fragrance.

While the sign states that the flavour contains alcohol, I found it to be rather muted or perhaps overwhelmed by the former two taste profile. Pints & Cones (Serangoon)

SugarTree Gelato
988 Upper Serangoon Road #01-28, Stars of Kovan, Singapore 533734
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tue – Fri), 10am – 10pm (Sat – Sun),Closed Mon

From the team that bought you Two Bakers, SugarTree Gelato is their latest venture and features an assortment of gelato made from scratch using all-natural premium ingredients.

This is a hole-in-a-wall takeaway kiosk located within Stars of Kovan.

Some of the notable gelato flavours were Keylime Cheesecake, Passionfruit Mint and Lemongrass Ginger.

Single scoop retails for $4.20 and Double scoop going at $7.60, with a $0.80 top-up for Premium flavour gelato.

I was particularly intrigued by the Banana Milk, which reminded me of the famous Korean bottled beverage. The only difference is that real banana fruit goes into the gelato making process.

The owners shared that they use only ripened banana to achieve its natural sweetness, with no addition of artificial flavouring. Sweet Cheeks Gelato (Tai Thong)

Bloom Artisan
645 Yishun Street 61, #01-322, Singapore 760645
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Mon, Wed – Fri), 11am – 10pm (Sat – Sun), Closed Tues

Bloom Artisan Cafe is the newest gelato shop opened in Yishun within the housing estates.

Their menu features 12 gelato flavours (Single scoop $3.50/ Double Scoops $6/ Premium +$0.70) at any one time.

Flavours range from the more basic Chocolate Mousse and Cool Choco Chip Mint, to interesting ones such as Wheatmilk, Whiskey Crancherry, Apple & Mint Sherbet and Hojicha & Red Bean.

Available in Cups, Cones (+$0.70) and Brown Butter Sourdough Waffle ($4), the gelato are also available for takeaways in 2 sizes: 16oz ($12) and 26oz ($18).

I decided to go with a single scoop of Whiskey Crancherry (Single Premium $4.20) in a Waffle Cone ($0.70) as recommended by the staff. (Also note that ice cream tasting is not allowed for hygiene purposes.)

True enough, the alcoholic smell and taste were strong and distinctive, with tiny bits of cran-cherry (cranberry and cherry) that added some textural contrast to the smooth and creamy gelato. Bloom Artisan (Yishun)

Gelato Labo – West Coast
108 Faber Drive, Singapore 129418
Opening Hours: 1pm – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 1pm – 10:30pm (Fri – Sun)

Possibly one of the up and coming gelato store that offers an exhaustive range of bold gelato offerings.

Some of the newer flavours which previously didn’t came across at Jalan Besar were such as Watermelon Mint & Chia Seeds, Naval Orange & Chrysanthemum, Colombian Cold Brew & Cookie Butter Bits, Caribbean Rum & Charred Pineapple and Yamanashi Peach & Lemongrass.

Flavours are on seasonal rotating basis and single scoop from Premium range goes for $5 and Gourmet range for $6.

I was rather intrigued by the Sakura Smoke, Artichoke & Pear Compote, which has a paring of fruity with mild nutty undertones, followed by a light smoky after taste.

Another flavour which left an impression was the Kyoto Shiso & Yuzu Jelly. This Japanese herb-flavored gelato has fresh earthy and citrusy notes, coupled with sweet yuzu jelly bits embedded within for the bite texture. Gelato Labo (Faber Drive)

Gelato Labo
11 Cavan Road, 01-09, Singapore 209848
Tel: +65 8831 3078
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Mon – Tues, Thurs), 12pm – 10pm (Fri – Sun), Closed Wed

This is the other outlet of Gelato Labo, located at an inconspicuous corner of Cavan Road, of close proximity to Jalan Besar Stadium and hipster cafes such as Chye Seng Huat and Tiramisu Hero.

The humble shop with limited sitting outside churns out small batch flavours through a constant process of experimentation and refinement.

Flavours include Sicilian Pistachio, Milk Chocolate & Cereal Nibs, Del Monte Banana & Cacao Nibs, Mango and Granny Smith Apply Jelly, Packham Pear & Thyme, Strawberry & Rosemary, 70% Guanaja Dark Chocolate & Valencia Orange Peel, Piemonte Roasted Hazelnut & Chocolate Nibs, but take note these are always rotating.

They use only fresh fruits and source for local and organic ingredients where possible in the production.

A scoop for the classic flavour goes for $5, while the premium is priced at $6. Double scoops at $8 and $10 respectively, while a Jumbo Cone is at $1.40.

The Sicilian Pistachio came highly recommended, with actual nuts within and not too sweet. Gelato Labo (Cavan Road)

NDO Café
1 Changi Village Rd, #01-2004, Singapore 500001
Opening Hours: 5pm – 10pm (Tues – Fri), 11am – 11pm (Sat), 11am – 10pm (Sun)

Not many may know there is an ice cream café in this part of Singapore, near the popular Changi Village Food Centre. NDO Café, short for Nid D’oiseaux café, has been converted from a furniture shop.

Its bright yellow exterior and European style décor should appeal to many, making it a possible instagrammable spot.

A single serve goes for $5.50, double for $9, and triple for $11.50. There are also Parfairs such as the Squirrel Fantasy, Mona Fantasy and Verre de Terre going at $12.50.

A Waffles such as the Rock Road Trip of waffles with rocky road gelato, bourbon vanilla gelato topped with mini marshmallows, peanuts, crème Chantilly and chocolate & caramel sauce goes for $14.50.

Tom’s Palette
51 Middle Road #01-01, Singapore 188959
Tel: +65 6977 9749
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9:30pm (Mon – Fri), 12pm – 10pm (Sat), 1pm – 7pm (Sun)

Tom’s Palette must be one of the longest standing local ice cream café in Singapore. It has reopened at Middle Road after its move from Shaw Towers.

They are known for their creative gelato flavours, with over 180 flavours to date, including Salted Egg Yolk, Nasi Lemak and Mango Sticky Rice.

In addition to a new look and the re-introduction of 27 flavours, the gelateria will introduce a refreshed menu from time to time.

Flavours are rotating, those available previously include Coconut Sorbet, Dark Chocolate Sorbet, Granny’s Favourite – chocolate malt, cookie dough and chocolate chips, Honey Cinnamon, Milo Dinosaur, Nutella Swirl, Oreo Cheesecake, Parmesan Cheese & Cream Crackers, Salted Caramel Cheesecake, Summerberries, White Chocolate Nori, and Yuzu.

A medium cup goes for $5 with 2 flavours, while a double scoop cone is $7.70.

Tittle Tattle
183 Selegie Road, #01-03, Singapore 188329
Opening Hours: 24 hours Daily

Tittle Tattle is the newest cafe opened twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week; all the time at Selegie Road.

Just when I thought the the trend for Over-The-Top Milkshakes is over, Tittle Tattle offers their own version of Over-The-Top Waffles ($22) that comes with Macarons, Ice Cream Cone, Marshmallows, Kinder Bueno, Gem Biscuits, Rainbow Biscuit Wafers, Strawberries and a scoop of either Vanilla or Chocolate Ice Cream.

Strongly advise to share with your friends because the Tittle Tattle Disasters ($22) is no joke with the number of toppings on it.

There was a good mix of nostalgic old-school treats (Gem Biscuits, Rainbow biscuit wafers, Marshmallow) with trendy desserts (Macarons, waffles) that resonate with their retro-theme.
Tittle Tattle (Selegie Road)

100Labs
41 Sultan Gate, Singapore 198489
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tue – Thu, Sun), 12pm – 12am (Fri – Sat), Closed Sun

Along Sultan Gate at Kampong Gelam is ANOTHER NEW gelato and waffles cafe in Singapore called “100Labs”.

Their current menu only serves Waffles ($7 – $12.90), Gelato ($3.50), Coffee ($3.50 – $5), Tea ($4 – $4.90), Smoothie ($6), Milkshake ($6) and Pastries ($4-5) on their menu.

12 rotating gelato flavours ($3.50 each) are available each month, with the usual classic flavours including Vanilla, Pistachio, Hazelnut Rocher and Dark Chocolate.

Other interesting ones you can find Banana Nut Crunch, Honey & Figs, Lychee/Mango Sorbet, Wild Berries, Taro Yam & Coconut, Hojicha and Coconut Cream.

The freshly-made waffles had that buttery-fragrance, complemented well with the golden syrup drizzled.

For those with a sweet tooth, there is unlimited serving of the golden syrup to satisfy your cravings. 100Labs (Sultan Gate)

Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato
802 North Bridge Road, #01-01, Singapore 198770
Tel: +65 9665 7534
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

Gelato Cafe With Unique Flavours Such As Burnt White Chocolate
“Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato” does not have the conventional name, and may take a while for people to remember.

The name came about as the owners fell in love with the Milkweed flower. Upon research, they learnt that the flower is integral to the existence of the Monarch butterfly species.

The gelato is made in small batches, with interesting and unique flavours such as Brown Butter Sage, Burnt White Chocolate, Soursop Mint, Ispahan, Roasted Sesame, Sea Salt Gula Jawa, Rhubarb Buttermilk, Soursop Mint to Lavender.

They also offer the more ‘conventional’ flavours such as Match, Tahitian Vanilla, Lavender, Chocolate Sorbet, and Pistachio.

When I tried the Brown Butter Sage, it had a delightful, creamy texture, and the flavours were pronounced but not overwhelming.

Just right on the sweetness level that you feel like you could have more. Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato (North Bridge Road)

Hvala – Keong Saik
34 Keong Saik Road, Singapore 089141
Opening Hours: 11am – 9:30pm (Mon – Sun)

Matcha fans will not be unfamiliar with Hvala, who started off as a waffles kiosk at 313@somerset and subsequently opened a few Japanese-style cafes over the years at CHIJMES and TripleOne Somerset.

Vegans and those who are lactose intolerant will be excited to visit this outlet at Keong Saik.

There is an outlet-exclusive vegan menu such as Dairy-Free Waffles ($11.80), Chaffogato ($7.80), Fudgy Chocolate Brownie ($12.80), Kinako Paste with Gelato ($8.80), Dairy-free Gelato ($5.80 – 6.80), Oatmilk Tea Lattes ($5.80 – $7.80) and Oatmilk Ice Blend ($7).

12 gelato flavours ($5.80 – 6.80) are available at any one time, all vegan using soy milk instead of fresh milk.

Think Matcha Level 1 and Level 2, Genmaicha, Hojicha, Goma (Black Sesame), Matcha Cookies & Cream, Hazelnut, Oatmilk and Strawberry/ Chocolate/ Yuzu/ Rockmelon sorbet.

This is probably the first time I had come across a Dairy-Free Waffles ($11.80) in Singapore, made using Oatmilk instead of the usual butter and fresh milk.

As oat milk is less creamy and milky compared to fresh milk, the dairy-free waffle was more airy and less dense compared to normal waffle.

Without using butter, the aroma from the waffles was mainly attributed to the cinnamon powder used, which surprisingly tasted Christmasy. Hvala (Keong Saik)

Sweet Cheeks Gelato
37 Tai Thong Crescent Singapore 347862 (Potong Pasir MRT)
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm (Sun – Thurs), 12pm – 1am (Fri – Sat)

Gelato Cafe Has Delicious Crispy Waffles And Interesting Flavours
Started by 3 fresh graduates from SMU and with an Italy-trained chef handcrafting fresh gelato flavours daily, I think Sweet Cheeks Gelato does have some differentiating factors.

Sweet Cheeks Gelato offer a number of classic favourites such as Hazelnut with Nutella Swirl and Honeycomb, Sweet Cheeks, and also stocks less conventional options like Cinnamon Brown Bread, Coconut Mango Sorbet, Ricotta with Pistachio as well as Honey Chrysanthemum with Cacao Nibs.

Well, Chrysanthemum with Cacao Nibs may just remind you of … Birds Of Paradise?

For people who love some added textures and crunch in your ice cream (well Ben & Jerry’s style), then you could enjoy ingredients such as honeycomb biscuits, fresh coconut milk, house-made toasted brown bread, and roasted pistachio bits added within varied flavours. Sweet Cheeks Gelato (Tai Thong)

Jack & Amy’s Gelato (formerly known as “One Stone Three Birds”)
443 Clementi Avenue 3, #01-71, Singapore 120443
Opening Hours: 1pm – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Located right beside Clementi Mall, Jack & Amy’s Gelato previously known as “One Stone Three Birds” or “onestonethreebirds” is a small, cozy space offer takeout gelato that is made in-house.

Jacky, who manages the shop together with his wife, is not only the director but also the one who comes up with new flavours for the shop.

Flavours during my time of visit included Creamy Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate, Rum & Raisin, Mister Espresso & Banana, Salted Caramel, Hojicha, Strawberry & Basil, and Chocolate & Orange.

The Black Sesame Gelato ($3.80 for single scoop, $7.00 for double scoop) was one of my favourites. The sesame seeds were roasted in house before gelato production, hence the intense sesame fragrance.

You can also taste the texture of the sesame seeds in this, which provides an elevated gelato experience. Jack & Amy’s Gelato

Butterknife Folk
Funan #02-02, 107 North Bridge Road Singapore 179105
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Butterknife Folk has been slowly building its fanbase through its wacky, creative flavours. The shop first started at River Valley Road, but that has been turned into a central kitchen and so the main retail store now is at Funan.

The one unique thing is the gelato shop changes its flavours ALL THE TIME.

So if you really enjoy something, better get a tub back or come back the next day, or you may never get to try it again. It happened to me before

This is one of those gelato shops I would head back once in a while, just to be surprised. And my recommendation is, be very open in trying out new things and not just stick to the tried-and-tested.

Scoops are priced at $5 single and $9 for double. Some of the previously introduced flavours launched include Ondeh Ondeh, Goma, Citrus Bitters, Blueberry Lavender, Dulce & Banana, Jasmine Tea Amarena, Madagascan Vanilla, Roasted Pistachio, and Brown Butter Pecan.

And the once-in-a-while Chicken Rice Gelato, Mala, Tau Huay Zui, Muah Chee, and Chee Cheong Fun. For real. Butterknife Folk (Funan)

Carmen’s Best Ice Cream
13 Stamford Rd, #B1-32 Capitol Singapore
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 8:30pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

Premium ice cream brand Carmen’s Best from The Philippines has opened its first overseas store, setting camp at Capitol Singapore (previously known as “Capitol Piazza”).

Every flavour is inspired by real stories from Paco’s global travels, from the signature flavour “He’s Not Worth It” to seasonal ones like Cheese, Strawberry, Ube, and Brazilian Coffee.

Other popular must-taste flavours include Pistachio, Dark Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Butter Pecan, Cookies & Cream, and Cookie Dough.

Start with a single flavour at $4.90 per scoop, or go for 2 scoops at $5.90 (pick two flavours).

Want a freshly-made waffle cone to go with your ice cream? Just add $0.60 and you’re good to go. Eating on the go? Get a pint for $16.00, enough for a satisfying binge.

Try the Pistachio flavour, a barometer for quality artisanal ice cream. You can tell from its taste and texture there’s no cutting corners when it comes to using premium quality ingredients.

Made with pistachios sourced from Sicily, Italy, known for their bolder, more intense flavour, this ice cream incorporates 100% pure pistachio with whole pistachio bits for that extra crunch. Carmen’s Best (Capitol Singapore)
