[Perth] While the impression of Perth is that it is generally a much quieter city than Sydney and Melbourne, the boom in recent years has caused a sprout of cafes, bars and bistros in its downtown CBD area.
One of the newest kids in the block, Lot Twenty is literally located at Lot 20 of the Perth’s Cultural Centre adjacent to the State Theatre. It’s at the corner of James Street and William Street, found within a golden bronze exterior.
You spot customers here and there in various bars during the after 8pm chill-out period, but Perth’s newest small bar is packed upstairs and down, indoor and outdoor.
“Perth is the place where something good opens, everybody knows about it”, co-owner Andy McIntyre explained, while I was impressed that he remembered everyone’s names after one round of introduction.
The two storey heritage listed building which was originally an old police constabulary has all the vibes, boosting wooden industrial interior with hanging warm hued light bulbs. Downstairs for the drinks, upstairs for its open-kitchen.
Lot Twenty works with local producers, focusing on the produce that is in season, resulting in regular menu changes. The menu has been designed so that customers can mix and match the foods uniquely suited to your particular dietary requirements.
James St Deli Board (AUD$18/$35), with the inclusion of Jamon Serrano, chorizo, pork terrine, beef bresaola, mustard, pickles, breads
Garden Grazing Board (AUD $15/$30) with French onion dips, local hand crafted cheeses, pickled vegetables, vegetarian tartlets, breads
We loved both the sharing platters, with the meatier board swept clean quicker. The jamon was exceptional (reminded me of all the good things about Spain), while the vegetarian tartlets also gained favour for its lightness and creamy fillings.
Lamb Ribs (AUD $20) with tamarind glaze and fresh herbs
Tasmanian Salmon (AUD$27), miso crust, pinenut dressing and pickled ginger
Lightly Smoked Pork Belly (AUD$22), chestnut crumb, cardamom and apple jelly
Black Angus Rump Steak ($26), eggplant and chermoula (250g)
The mains received much feedback from the table. The Lamb dish sourced from Amelia Park Bunbury was the favourite, all tender and juicy which got us licking the fingers in contentment.
The salmon had a wonderful creamy and velvety texture, but could have been marred by its uneven seasoning. On the other end of the spectrum, the steak unfortunately, though prepared medium was tough.
The 4 desserts of Chocolate Pot de Crème, Salted Caramel Macaron, Lemon Madeleine, Lemon Cream Profiterole with Vanilla Ice Cream (AUD$16).
I loved the Chocolate Pot de Crème so much I wanted to ‘smuggle’ a bottle back. The large macarons – two of them landed in my belly even though I told myself one is the limit.
