Hyde & Co. – Cafe & Tearoom With An English Charm

Walking into Hyde & Co situated along North Bridge Road in the vibrant Kampung Glam precinct, you would realise it is very different from all the other cafes. Oh, it is very English.

A line on its wall say “You can’t buy happiness but you can buy tea, and that’s kind of the same thing.” This European inspired café has an extensive tea menu of 45 tea selections.

Even their signature spells of an old British charm. Crumpets? Those are a mix between and English muffin and a sponge cake.

Co-owner Derrick Chew who is also the artistic director of a local theatre company Sight Lines thought that scones may not appeal that much to the local customers, and wanted to offer quintessentially different.

The Crumpets ($6.50 for stack of 3) are round at about 7-8 cm and 2 cm thick, spongy and airy with many small pores, with a texture in between an English muffin and scone. It is served with butter and drizzled with maple syrup.

Their Lady Hyde ($12.90) is the classic Croque Madame given a local twist, with melted cheddar cheese over honey baked ham, pineapple slice and, sunny side up.

Sounds a little crazy already, tastes like Hawaiian pizza meats French Croque Monsieur meets English crumpets. That’s before I cut further into the pieces, and realised the sprinkling of (I think very delicious) Hebi Hiam (dried spicy shrimps). Too much going on, yet it does make the brunch item a lot more exciting.

Hyde & Co.’s other signature, the Gula Gula ($12.90) comes with stack of 3 crumpets topped with coconut flakes and gula Melaka.

You may need a few friends to share this. The first piece tasted great, though subsequently, it was just gula plus more crumpet. Perhaps a scoop of ice cream on the side would complete the picture.

While you may keep seeing the same things in other cafes, Hyde & Co.’s refreshing take and contemporary tea room setting is a much welcomed entry, and makes you want to spend a lazy afternoon there.
