[Bangkok, Thailand] If you walk around the street food stalls of Bangkok, you may notice golden crisp oily deep fried chicken EVERYWHERE.
We heard that Soi Polo Chicken could be very well be Bangkok’s best fried chicken restaurant, and knew we just had to come – no matter what it takes.

Somewhere along Wireless Road, it would be a 15-20 minute walk from Hotel Indigo, Central Embassy, or Lumpini station. The restaurant is so called because it is near the Polo Football Park, so look out for directions to the park and turn into the smaller lane.

There are two restaurants within a minute’s walk from one another – one has aircon, the other doesn’t.
The well-known and long-standing E-san food specialist has attracted many, from royalties and celebrities to local Thai office crowd in the vicinity.

Recommended dishes include Fried Chicken (but of course), Grilled Beef (70 baht), Grilled Pork (70 baht), Larb (60 baht), Spicy Soup (80 baht), Grilled Catfish (250 baht) and Somtum Papaya Salad (50 baht). Their papaya salad had versions with salted egg (70 baht) and mixed seafood (120 baht).

They all come for one main reason – the Kai Todd (120 baht for half chicken, 240 baht for whole) Fried Chicken, flavoured with black pepper and topped with crispy golden-brown garlic. Most would savour this dish with sticky rice and som tum.

The tender juicy drumstick dipped with spicy sauce was a tasty experience hard to forget. The first bite was aroy mak mak! Juicy and succulent, well marinated, and some parts lingering with oil. I found some parts of the chicken dry though, especially the breast meat. Thus, it was half good, half more ordinary.

Instead, I found their Thai style fish cake (100 baht) very delicious, freshly made with featherback fish without batter and flour, and therefore tasted more ‘real’ than those I had locally.
