Oberstrasse is a common street name in German speaking Europe towns. It means Upper (Ober) Street (strasse). This is also the name of the café at the back of Kitchener Complex, next to Porn’s Thai Boat Noodee.
There is a sentimental reason behind the name as well. 31 Oberstrasse at Switzerland was where the owner met his first and only girlfriend. Aww…
When he was studying at St Gallen Switzerland, he stayed at 31 Oberstrasse, learnt how to appreciate companionship, friendship and quality, and thus hoped to reproduce that homely feeling over at his new café.

Food wise, expect Cakes, French Butter Pastries, All-day Breakfast, Pasta, Bratwurst Rosti as well as beer food such as Luncheon Fries, Buffalo Drumlets, Cheesy Melt Meat Balls and 7-inch Pizzas.

Espresso and Latte ($3.00 and $4.50 respectively) were roasted in-house to medium dark, using 100% arabica beans from 4 continents.
We tried their food over a couple of visits, liked the quiet atmosphere, dark furniture and tall ceiling, but thought taste could be further tweaked.

The Big Breakfast ($12) with scrambled eggs (you can choose the style of eggs), chicken sausage, roasted mushrooms, baked beans and mesclun salad could be better. The eggs were not creamy enough, mushrooms needed some salt, and bread tough and chewy – so much so that we took a bite and couldn’t finish the rest.

Similarly, the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich ($9.50) had tender chicken which was well marinated, but was let down by the tough ciabatta which was hard to bite or cut through.
So maybe it was just the breads.

We liked the feel of the café, and believe this could be the place to sit down, enjoy coffee and read a book. A little suggestion would be to have some distinct signatures to differentiate from all other cafes serving similar brunch items, and perhaps increase the ‘German-ness’ food-wise.
