It’s time to venture to Lorong Kilat again. This stretch of road near Upper Bukit Timah is literally populated with a row of characteristic cafés and restaurants, making this THE potential hotspot for café hopping.
Cravings for a slice of New York? East Manhattan Bakery Café attempts to present its side of the big apple with a range of freshly baked artisanal breads, cakes, breakfast items, main courses and American craft beers.
People living in the Katong vicinity may find the brand familiar, known for their breads, sourdoughs, croissants and cakes at its Katong V outlet. The dine-in restaurant concept at Lor Kilat was started because customers staying at the west side requested for one. Their wish is granted.
Owner-baker John Wee spent a year learning classic America baking in Manhattan, and therefore crusty, rustic and chewy loaves are characteristic of the products found here. He continues to experiment, his latest offering a gluten free Spelt Walnut Boule ($7.50).
Healthier Main Courses
This branch at Lor Kilat also provides a fuller-dining experience with its mains, a number of them gluten free. Other than salads, there were four quinoa-based dishes, with Salmon ($16.80), Basil Chicken ($16.80), Stir Fried Beef ($16.80) and Eggs Benedict ($12.80).
Prices are family friendly, all nett, no service charge, and GST is absorbed.
We gave a thumbs-up to the Salmon Quinoa ($16.80), with a substantial slab of crispy pan-seared salmon, resting on a creamy mushroom sauce.
The Stir Fried Beef ($16.80) came a close-second, and would have fared better if the slices were tenderer. A point to note: While this may be designed like an American-based café, some dishes do taste rather ‘Asian’.
Breakfast & Brunch Items
John mentioned that his best-seller was the Chicken Avocado Sandwich ($12.80) served with egg, fries and garden greens, and we agree with the other customers.
There were two components that we liked – the pan-fried juicy chicken meat with a slight crisp, and wholegrain bread that was dense and chewy. Of course, breads are their strength.
If you are having their Scrambled Egg Waffle ($12.80), pick their homemade blueberry sauce (tough decision as the other choices are salted caramel or herb butter). Dip the waffle pieces into the jam, which was luscious without being overly sweet.
Desserts
The eye-catching instagram-worthy Rainbow Cheesecake ($6.90) would likely fly off the shelves, but our palates went for the Rum & Raisin and Yuzu Cheesecakes ($6.90).
The former was a richly dense and boozy cheesecake, which would go well with a special Rum Latte (not in menu, ask for it), all ready to be set on fire.
Private Dining
For those intending to host a gathering or birthday party of sorts, it is good to know that East Manhattan Bakery Café’s private dining offers an all-inclusive package for 20 pax at only $900 nett. This includes a generous buffet spread, with hot selections of tarts and cakes, free flow of drinks, as well as free use of high-speed wi-fi, video and audio equipment.
