[Sydney, Australia] The very first thing you would notice about Yok Yor Thai Food Factory is the cooks, all dressed in sky blue overalls and bright yellow hard hats in the kitchen.
Serious. Not hot? But it sure is gimmicky and a visual selling point to see ‘construction workers’ frying up a storm of Pad Thai and Kuay Teow Moo.

My friends and I make it a yearly ‘pilgrimage’ to go to Yok Yor for supper. (Their main worry is it will get too crowded if this blogpost goes out. Many Singaporeans going for Hillsong Conference in Sydney this year.)

Yok Yor may not have that popularity factor that nearby competitor Chat Thai commands, but it should afford a decent, authentic Thai meal. We always see Thai customers dining. That should be an indication.

There are over a hundred food, dessert and drinks offered. That is an extensive Thai menu, including some not too common Isan-style street food.
With that kind of variety, there will bound to be some dishes that may not be that up to expectations. But in general, Yok Yor are more than okay taste-wise,

Two dishes I would always order. First, the Kuay Teaw Rua Boat Noodles, with choice of beef or pork. Chef Mek once ran a sidewalk soup stall in Bangkok, so this is his forte.
There are two options for portions – AUD$8.90 for large and AUD$4.90 for small. This you are seeing here, 5 bucks.
Tell me where else you can find filling, sizable, hot, delicious meal in a restaurant at Sydney for less than AUD$5?
Even though ‘Thai Boat Noodles’ could suggest a small portion, trust me, it is big enough for an Asian guy like myself. That rich, spicy, slight herbal soup base is very comforting during winter days.

Yok Yor’s Spicy Green Curry (AUD$9.90) also counts as one of my favourite versions anywhere in the world, including Bangkok itself.
Other than its coconut-rich gravy base filled with eggplant, there is something about the meat quality in Australia (both chicken and beef) which just enhances the taste of the bowl of curry.

My friends’ favourites… Tod Mun Goong Prawn Patties (AUD$8.20), Stew Pork Trotter with Rice (AUD$9.90), Thai Omellete with Chicken (AUD$9.90) Som Tum Kai Kem Green Papaya Salad with Salted Egg (AUD$10.50).
It’s convenient near Chinatown, affordable, offers quite tasty food with an element of fun.
