Described to “taste like heaven, but smell like hell” – Durian is many Singaporean’s favourite fruit, whose name is derived from the Malay word ‘duri’ which means thorn.
While a cup of durian can have very high calories (357 calories per cup!), it is said to be rich in phytonutrients and raise serotonin levels, thereby elevating one’s good mood.
Now we know why durians make people happy.
The durian fruit is used to flavour a wide variety of sweet edibles such as traditional Malay cakes, ice kachang, mooncakes and pancakes.

Durian Rainbow Ice Cream Cake – Available Goodwood Park Hotel
Kids could be tempted to eat this. Beware of heatiness! The photogenic show-stopping Durian Rainbow Ice Cream Cake ($11.75) comes with 7-coloured sponge wrapping around creamy durian ice cream embedded with D24 pulp. Durian never looked so pretty, unicorns would love it.

What would the French think? Macaron with durians ($22.45 for 6 pieces)! Dark chocolate shells with pulpy durian sandwiched in between. Dainty and decadent.

Durian Crème Brulee – Available at The Quarters Icon Village
Owner Deming was probably the first to commercialise Durian Crème Brulee, having started DCB Duriancanboleh in 2013. He saw durian as “God’s gift of custard”. On the surface, the Duriancanboleh ($7.00) looked like any usual crème brulee, but as you take a spoonful of the smooth luscious creamy base, the taste of distinctive durian kicked in yet not being overpowering. The texture was wonderful, I mean, compared to durian fruit which could be slimy.

Durian Chee Cheong Fun – Available House of Rice Roll and Porridge Killiney Road
The durian chee cheong fun is served chilled sprinkled with sugared peanuts. You either love or hate this, it’s either too strange or works well for you. Don’t worry, it is not smelly, though I must say that standard of the durian cheong fun has dropped over the years. It used to come much colder with fleshier fruit which was more ‘shiok’

Durian Gelato – Available Alfero Artisan Gelato
We have possible tried some D24 or Mao Shan Wang ice cream, and Udders serve quite a deliciously wicked scoop that makes it one of its most popular offering. But Durian gelato? Italian foreign talent Marco Alfero shows demonstrates his integration by mixing both D24 and Mao Shan Wang into his creamy gelato. And the result is something probably the Italian mafias would approve of.

Durian Mango Ice Kachang aka Liu Mang Bing – Available Jin Jin Dessert ABC Market
Also known as the ‘Gangster Ice Kachang’. What? This is a combination of LIU Lian (durian) and MANG Guo (mango) which comes together to form ‘Liu Mang’ which means ‘gangster’. Get it? Mango pieces with D24 durian puree in a scoop, drizzled with condensed milk on ice shavings. Oolahlah. (I am so waiting for some Korean café to do a durian bingsu one day.)

Otherwise known as Wei Xiang Yuen, the peanut dessert makers offer several varieties of smooth Taiwanese snow ice, from mango, soursop to the king of fruits – durian.

Durian Popiah – Available Magnificence Bugis (Wisma Alsagoff Building)
This almost unheard of shop sells Durian Sago, Durian Ice Kachang, Durian Milk Shake (serious) and Durian Popiah – inspired by street stalls in Taiwan. It’s basically peanut, vanilla ice cream with durian pulp wrapped in popiah skin. The only problem is, the shop has been closed the last few times we visited.

Mao Shan Wang Lava Cake with Mao Shan Wang Gelato. Goodness. We hear that the lava cake doesn’t flow all the time though. Opps!

Durian Prata – Available at Plaza Brasserie Park Royal
Combining two of Singapore’s favourite food, the durian plus prata grouping is really “win already”. Crispy salty on outside, with sweet gooey durian meat in the inside, this is surprising one very powerful reunion. I cheated a little and added more durian penyet. One word – “Power”.

Bonus. Durian Tau Huay – Available at Some Tau Hway Stalls
Amalak! Durian and Tau Huay?! Singapore’s beancurd has included flavours such as chocolate, strawberry, green tea and coffee. Durian tau huay may give your breath a different sniff.
Note: Daniel from Daniel’s Food Diary is no durian lover, but risked his breath for this entry. He grew to like durian, in any form (durian cakes, durian ice cream etc). Anything but the actual thorny fruit.
