Kaiserhaus – Food Of The Habsburg Empire, Authentic Austrian Cuisine

One of my favourite Eastern European cities is Vienna (Surprise it is not Prague) for the museums, architecture, food and feel of music in the air. The Figlmüller Schnitzel and Sacher Torte are foods I still fondly remember up to this day, even though my last trip there was more than 5 years ago.

The surprise when I realised I can find authentic Austrian cuisine in Singapore. AUSTRIAN. Kaiserhaus at Capitol Piazza specialises in Habsburg empire, featuring a menu which brings together cuisine from Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Northern Italy.

So brave. On one hand, I applaud the move to go so niche in offerings; on the other, the lack of mass appeal will be evident.

How many of us would go, “Hey, let’s go for some Austrian food” or are familiar with it in the first place? (Let’s do a quiz. How many dishes can you name which are from Hungary, Austria and Bosnia, excluding goulash.)

I am appreciative that Kaiserhaus stuck to their guts, opening up an unprecedented concept in Singapore, and kept their décor and menu authentic enough.

One disadvantage of the restaurant is its location. While directly above Capitol Theatre, getting up to the restaurant meant navigating to a side elevator which was not obvious at plain sight.

Chef Hans Lüftenegger who was the Executive Chef for Brotzeit chain helms the kitchen.

Some of its highlights – the Wiener Schnitzel ($38 for veal, $29 for pork) which is a pan-fried breaded and pounded thin cutlet, Hungarian Paprika Chicken Sausages ($18), Tafelspitzsulze Beef Aspic ($15) and Salon Beuschl ($24) a veal ragout.

While I hadn’t had many of the items yet, those I tried were hearty and tasty.

The Szeged-Style Goulash ($17, part of a 3-course lunch set) served with bread dumplings was a bowl of rich mushy stew that tasted comforting, enhanced with tangy paprika sauce. (Szeged is a town famous for paprika.)

I couldn’t stop munching away the Gabelkraut, which is a sweet variation of sauerkraut, served as a side along with the Hungarian sausage.

Kaiserhaus has also partnered with renowned Austrian patisserie Zauner, and its cakes and pastries would make some good afternoon treat.
