Every time I go to Ang Mo Kio, it is for food (and friends-visiting). Other than being known as ‘The Lee Hsien Loong constituency’ or ‘Westerner bridge’ area, I must say Ang Mo Kio is a rather colourful place with that kampong spirit – people are friendly and sincere, and cafes are mostly the down-to-earth types.

More than half cafes listed here are less than a year old, indicating a more vibrant cafe scene at AMK.

Workbench Bistro
Blk 332 Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 #01-1881
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tues-Sat), 11am – 10pm (Sun)
Tel: +65 84842488

A workbench is defined as a bench at which practical work is done. The owners of Workbench Bistro (who used to own Turquoise Room and Turquoise Bistro) treat the space as a place to create practical, honest to goodness food and hence the tagline “practical food creation”.

Expect Crab Meat Linguine ($16), Beef Burger ($14), Buffalo Wings ($10), Chicken Stew ($10), Truffle Fries ($9) and Crispy Light Waffles ($7.50 with one scoop of ice cream).

While we liked the moist Beef Burger which was served with paprika fries, the crab meat linguine had sauce that tasted like it was out of a can.

A mojito café with NO mojito. I was also expecting a coffee-mojito or something. The café offers a selection of savouries such as Black Angus Beefballs ($9.90), Club Sandwich ($6.90), but more known for their desserts of Mud Pie ($6.90) and Coconut Pannacotta ($6.90).The cakes were ordered, was unexpectedly dry. Unfortunately.

Note: Café Mojito has changed their operating hours, but their Facebook info page has not been updated.

Walking past Blk 532 of Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, you may least expect to find a British-based Fish and Chips café, right next to an incense shop.

Murphy’s Fish and Chips at Ang Mo Kio was actually first established in Hitchin United Kingdom at Queen Street, and claimed to be “award-winning”. The signature Murphy’s Fish and Chips featured both normal batter ($16) and special non-oily batter ($17) versions, using Canadian arrowtooth fish characterised by their flat white flesh with mild flavour.

The Fish and Chips was easily better than some of the mass market brands, but wondered if residents nearby would choose to pay 3 times the price over the hawker centres to have ‘Western food’ here. (Read: Murphy’s)

Rainbow Cottage Café
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 Blk 452 Singapore 560452
Tel: +65 64512483
Opening Hours: 11am – 9:30pm

Rainbow Cottage Café did have a cottage and homely feel – wooden panels on the exterior, some Barney-coloured purple sofa at the side, a portion of its wall painted in sky blue with children’s toys.

The cafe serves a typical selection of ice cream, waffle, cakes, coffee, tea and savoury bites of pizza, pasta and lasagne.

Cakes are baked in-house, some looking more inspiring than others. The Rainbow Paddlepop ($7.5) while to the sweet and dense side, was pleasurably smooth and enjoyable. (Read: Rainbow Cottage Cafe)
