[Hualien, Taiwan] Located right beside a mini Shinto Shrine at Hualien County (supposedly one of the places of interest according to Trip Advisor), one might easily walk past 惦惦 lab:tiamtiam without realising it is a coffee place.
It looked just like a private housing property at a glance.
“惦惦” pronounced “Tiam Tiam”, means “to keep quiet” in the Taiwanese Hokkien dialect. (You can imagine a mother shouting at their children ”Tiam Tiam lah!”. )

With a courtyard in front of the single container-like structure within the compound, this mini garage has an entrance made up entirely of glass.

I was quite surprised when I first entered 惦惦 lab:tiamtiam, quite different from what I had imagined a garage would look like.
Instead, I would have thought that this is a furniture shop, with table and chairs made up of tree trunks, and a retail corner selling wooden tablewares.
With just 10 seats indoors (cosy and not too noisy), and located some distance away from the city centre and beside a shrine, the place eluded a certain peace and tranquility.

The menu is entirely written in Chinese (which can be a problem for tourists) and offers a selection of Coffee (TWD 80-160, SGD$3.60-7.20), Tea (TWD 80-90, SGD$3.60-4) and Desserts (TWD 100-120, SGD$4.50-5.40).
Do note that the minimum spending here is either a cup of beverage or a dessert.

I had a cup of Latte (TWD 100, SGD$4.50), reasonably priced and well made with a smooth and medium body with slight acidity.
Not too sure about the blend used as the barista kept “tiamtiam” about it.

Desserts are only available after 12pm daily and for dine-in purpose only.
The selection changed occasionally and I came across Sweet Potato Chiffon Cake (TWD 100, SGD$4.50), Pineapple Cake (TWD 120, SGD$5.40) and Lemon Tart (TWD 120, SGD$5.40) when we were there.
The Sweet Potato Chiffon Cake (TWD 100, SGD$4.50) was soft and fluffy, with tiny bits of sweet potato in it for a chewy texture.
惦惦 lab:tiamtiam is probably one of my favourites cafe in Hualien City, with good coffee and desserts and a “tiamtiam” environment to enjoy the day.
