Hello 2018! I genuinely think this will be a better year.
In terms of the restaurant and cafe scene, we should continue to see many NEW openings, and I anticipate about at least one per day. Unfortunately, there will be many others who are likely to throw in the towel as well.
2018 will be the year many other overseas food brands head over to Singapore. I have heard on the grapevine the ‘usual suspects’ which are coming. These food should go viral and get Singaporeans excited, but let’s hope they can maintain standards and consistency as well.
For this January list, I have included two overseas brands FYI – Bobii Frutii from Taiwan and Say Chiizu Toast from Bangkok which will be opening up in January. Though they are technically not cafes.
I love it to see cafes doing more to help the underprivileged. There are Seeds Café which trains persons with disabilities, and The Community Coffee which donates part of their proceeds to charity.

It is heartening to see the Singapore society getting more inclusive, and I make it a point to help cover some of these hidden gems that go beyond to help others.
Seeds is another undiscovered café that is full of heart.
Its location may provide some indication of its mission, as it is found within Rainbow Centre at Margaret Drive School.
Therefore, Seeds is a vocational training ground for persons with disabilities so that they can transit to open employment, and a platform to advocate for a more inclusive community. Seeds Café (Margaret Drive)

Located at level 2 of Far East Plaza where youngsters (used to) frequent, The Community Coffee may seem like a bar from a distance.
Pink neon lights, dim interior, an industrial outlook, a bar table for filtered coffee and 18 seats in total.
As a non-profit organisation, The Community Coffee is all about giving back to the public.
$1 from the sales of each cup of coffee will be donated.
At the moment, the cafe is in the talks of supporting Smile Asia, a group of independent charities that work together to fund the treatment of facial deformities such as cleft lip. The Community Coffee (Far East Plaza)

Ice Cream Cafe At King Albert Park With Wasabi, Matcha Gao Flavours
Kindred Folk is a cosy two storey cafe serving up handcrafted ice creams, other desserts and fusion pastas.
In terms of Ice Cream flavours, they included Roasted Rice Milk Tea, Watermelon-Calamansi Sorbet, Cereal Milk, Grapefruit Froyo, Matcha Gao, Sea Salt Gula Coconut, Latte, Pure Hazelnut, to a very interesting Wasabi.
$3.70 per scoop for the basic flavours, and students and residents of KAP Residences get a 10% discount.
You can also find Pasta dishes here ($15 ala carte, $12.90 for set lunch, $9.90 for students), and include Mi-so Sexy pasta – capellini tossed in a light miso and roasted sesame sauce; and Asian Flush Pasta – slightly spicy tomato cream sauce flavoured with curry leaves. Taiwanese-Owned Ice Cream Café. For Crepes and Weekend Brunch At Serangoon
Located right opposite to NEX (exit F of Serangoon MRT station), along the stretch of shophouses, is an ice cream creamery opened by the Taiwanese.
For the menu, ice cream is available in single ($3.50) and double ($6.50) scoops, with an additional $1 for premium flavours.

Pickleville opened by the people behind Sarnies have also opened a rice bowl and toast focused café.
For breakfast from 8am till 11am, the Fancy Toast served include Avocado on Toast ($9.50), Ham and Cheese ($11), Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese ($13), Nutella and Banana ($8) and Peanut Butter & Jelly ($8). You can also build your own toast.

Another health-food focused café has opened in the CBD. The Harvestry serves up mixed grain bowls and artisanal coffee at International Plaza (closer to the side of the taxi drop-off).
The good thing is, the café starts opening from 8am during weekdays.
Busy CBD workers can grab some coffee and all day breakfast items of Scrambled Eggs & Toast ($6.00), Sous Vide Chicken Sandwich ($8.50), Pulled Pork Sandwich ($8.50) and Smoked Salmon Croissant ($9.00) before work.

Soul ALife is a fully vegan cafe located at China Square, which aims to break the stereotype that vegan food is tasteless and unappetizing.
The cafe serves all-day brunch food of Smashed Avo on Toast, mains such as Teriyaki Burger, salads such as Soul Salad, to desserts of Raw Vegan Cheesecake and Protein Brownies.
Signature items included the BBQ Burger ($9.90), Scramble Toast ($8.90), Mac and Cheese ($7.90), Buddha Bowl ($9.90), Ultimate Combo ($9.90) which incorporates guacamole, tofu scramble, salsa, sauteed mushroom and tofu feta on sourdough bread.

Music Cafe Hidden Within The Star Vista
Swee Lee is known to be the place to get your dream musical instrument, and they have recently expanded to include a café within their flagship store at The Star Vista.
The NEW café called Swee Lee Social Club, is meant for music lovers of any stripe to gather and connect.
Offerings are limited though, which include Flat White ($5), Cold Brew Coffee ($6), Hot Chocolate ($6), Sweet Toast ($7), and Waffles & Ice Cream ($10).

Japanese Tea Kiosk With Cheese Tea And Golden Pearls, At Raffles Place
This is one of the few kiosks in Singapore that focuses on Japanese tea, inspired by “chaseki” (茶席) – a Japanese term which broadly means “formal place for tea”. It is said to be a collaboration between Gryphon Tea and The Soup Spoon.
The menu is divided into Roji Tea, Iced Lattero, Sparkling Fruit Tea and Beauty Fruit Tea.
You can choose the sweetness level of standard, half, or minimal. Only rock sugar is used to bring out the flavours of the Japanese teas.
I ordered a Melona Manpuku ($4.50), and would like to think of this as a more delicate and healthier version than many sugared drinks out there.
The drink had the lovely tea bitterness of Japanese Sencha matched with light fruity sweetness of honey melon. The golden pearls with tinge of sweetness, were soft and chewy,

Taiwan’s Instagrammable Bubble Tea Coming To Singapore
Catching up on the trend of both Taiwanese bubble tea and Instagrammable drinks such as colourful layered drinks seen in night markets, Taiwanese-brand Bobii Frutii will be opening its very first store in Singapore at The Clementi Mall.
It is known for their beautiful (and Instagrammable) layers made using milk, tea and colourful pearls, with no artificial flavourings, man-made essences, creamer or preservatives.
Their bubble teas have interesting names such as Think “Don’t Want To Work”, “Mermaid’s Tears”, “Childhood Memories”, and “Uji Snow”.

Hokkaido Cheese Toast With Stretchy Cheese From Bangkok
Say Chiizu Toast has garnered some social media attention in Bangkok with its cutesy yellow packaging, toasts of varied flavours, and most important of all – that stretchy cheese.
The viral Cheese Toast store is also set to open at VivoCity (#B2-K16) in January 2018.
There will be 5 flavours offered – Original, Chocolate, Charcoal, Strawberry and Matcha Cheese, all priced at $3.80 each.
